Paru en feuilleton en 1915 puis en livre en 1917, The Son of Tarzan est le quatrième tome du monumental Cycle de Tarzan qui comprend pas moins de 26 tomes ! Sa première publication en français date de 1936. L'enfant d'homme élevé par Kala la guenon, après être devenu Tarzan, seigneur des singes et de la jungle, a recouvré sa véritable identité : Lord Greystoke. Il a épousé Jane, la jeune fille qu'il a connue dans la jungle et qu'il aime.
D'elle il a eu un fils, Jack, qu'il a sauvé du sort tragique que lui réservaient Rokoff et Paulvitch, ses deux irréductibles ennemis dans les précédentes aventures. Rokoff a succombé sous les crocs et les griffes de Sheeta, la fidèle panthère, et Paulvitch ne vit plus que pour assouvir sa vengeance. Il tente d'attirer le fils de Tarzan hors de Londres, mais le jeune homme, avec l'aide d'Akut, le grand anthropoïde que Paulvitch produit dans les foires, déjoue le complot.
Jack et Akut fuiront ensemble vers la sauvage jungle africaine où Tarzan a été élevé. Là, le garçon devra apprendre à connaître et à comprendre les grands animaux. Il devra aussi affronter les dangers que son père a connus avant lui. Et c'est en tant que Korak-le-Tueur, presque aussi redoutable que Tarzan lui-même, qu'il arrachera à une bande de pillards arabes la jeune Meriem dont il s'éprendra. Dès lors, il découvrira que les pièges de la jungle ne sont rien en comparaison de ceux que tendent les hommes... Edgar Rice Burroughs, né à Chicago (1875-1950), est connu aujourd'hui comme le créateur des aventures de Tarzan.
Tout comme les ouvres de science-fiction de ce grand précurseur dans le genre planet opera (Cycle de Mars, de Vénus, de la Lune, de Pellucidar), le cycle de Tarzan mérite amplement d'être redécouvert. Le quatrième tome d'une série de 26 !
